Waterfalls

This fall begins in the center of Bellavista. It’s the only fall that is located in a city and can be seen from any location in Banos. Below the fall are the thermal pools of the same name.
It’s located at the intersection of Martinez and Montalvo and is accessible by taxi or foot. |
Formed by the water of the river Pastaza, it’s located in the sector Lligua in San Martin. Easy access by car, taxi, bus etc. From Banos take the road to Ambato to the area called Pititig and take the turn off to the Zoo.
Drive in crossing the bridge, the fall is on the other side of the Zoo.
You have about a 20 minute walk downhill to the fall. | |
| There is no bathing and it’s recommended you take a rope for the trail. Rope is available in the store near the zoo. |

Formed by the river Bascun, it’s located in front of the bus station in Banos. You take a tail to the left of the bridge San Francisco , cross the river on the hanging bridge and continue on the trail to the left ‘til you reach the bank of the river. More or less 20 minute walk.

Located in the area of Ulba and formed by the river of the same name. To reach it, take the entrance to Runtun , turn right before the bridge that crosses the river Ulba. About a kilometer up the road, you will see an overlook, from there you can see the fall. If you want to walk to the fall, in the center of the town Ulba there is a well marked trail that follows the river banks. You can bath in the fall or other pools in this area- bathing suit recommended. There are stores and restaurants in the town to serve your needs.

Formed by the waters from the river by the same name, these 7 falls break the silence. Located in Ulba, about 100 meters after you cross the bridge over the river Ulba, take the road to the right about 2 kilometers to you reach the area Chamana. Fron there, it’s a short walk to the falls. You can bathe in the pools and this area is good for rock climbing. (contact a tour guide)
This area boasts the Hotel Chamanapamba- food and lodging available.

This flow of water is formed by the Pastaza river and is located in the jurisdiction of Ulba. The force of the water has decreased since it’s use by the hydroelectric dam Agoyan. Take a taxi or bus via road to Puyo about 6 kilometers and before you enter the tunnels look to the right for an overlook where you can observe the falls.
In this area is a cable car to cross the river (tarabita) and some food stands.

Formed by the river Chinchin, it’s name comes from the whiteness of the water and it’s movements resembling a bride’s veil. It’s located on the right, about 11 kilometers on the road to Puyo.
About a 30 minute walk downhill and crossing the river on a suspension bridge brings you there. You can also see the falls from the cable car and after crossing the river there is a trail down to the falls. There are basic services and a small hotel.

Located in the small town of the same name and the waters originating from the river so named. To get there, 14 kilometes from Banos on the Puyo road to the area called La Escudilla. Take the tarabita across the river and follow the trail, about 40 minute walk. Here you can bathe, see orchids, and fish. The hike is moderate and wear comfortable clothes and hiking shoes.
There are restauants in the small town, specialty, trout and you will find small fruit stands. |

Pailon del Diablo (devil ‘s cooking pot)

One of the best attraction of the area, it’s formed by the river named Rio Verde. When observed from the suspension bridge, one can see the cooking pot formation where the falls drop and an image of the devil’s face in the rocks ! Eighteen kilometers from Banos on the Puyo road, well marked to the right and take a 20 minute hike to the falls.
There’s a bar, restaurant, and lodging here.
Moderate to heavy hike (uphill on the return) good shoes ,water and comfortable clothes. Fifty cent to enter trail. |
The fall is formed by the river Verde, in this area one can also observe the Encanonado de Duende that was formed by volcanic rock.
To find the trail, go to Rio Verde the town. Near the coliseum on your right hand side you will find the entrance to the trail. Walk in about 200 meters, there will be a moderate entrance fee used to cover the maintenance of the area.
In this area, you will find all classes of tourist services. |

Formed by the river of the same name, you will encounter 12 falls starting with the Manantial Dorado (golden fountain) and ending with the rock of Machay right before the river flows in the river Pastaza.
To get there, take the road to Puyo, get off at Machay. Look to your left up the mountain for the trail, the trail is marked.
This area is a cloud forest were you will find many birds and a variety of orchids.
Bring your bathing suit. Also, you can make this a 2 day hike –contact a tour service in Banos. |
Before Machay there is a hostal, Pequeno Paraiso ( small paradise), where you can do sport fishing and enjoy eating your catch.

Located 28kilometers from Banos, the falls originate from the river San Francisco . After you cross the bridge San Francisco take a left hand turn and walk about an hour to the falls. Another 30 minutes you will see another fall called the Refugio de Gallo de la Pena, named after a local bird in the area.

During your journey through the cloud forest, you will see a variety of birds and flowers. It’s recommended to use a guide, one needs a bit of food and adequate rope for this journey.
During the weekend, there are stands selling food and drink, also in the town below there are tourist services.

This is a series of 4 falls formed by the river Guanmayacua .Located 4 kilometers below the town of Rio Negro .
There is another fall worth seeing called Brisa Hermosa ( beautiful breeze). There is a trail map in the area to find it.

It’s an hour and a half walk and you may want to use a native guide. To visit the falls close to the road use the local map. A must to see is the falls El Tambo, you can swim there. Also,you can practice rock climbimg, you will need a tour guide. Great place to see birds, orchids and just enjoy nature.
A little further down the road on the left hand side, you can see another waterfall called Algodon ( cotton ).

This fall is right beside the road, many stop here to cool off. Before entering the tunnel from Rio Blanco turn to the right, entering the old Puyo road. There is the fall.

These two falls areformed by the river Chinchin and located 14 kilometers on the road via Banos a Puyo in the town of Placer . Take a trail to the right and walk 3 hours to El Escudilla. Here you can practice canyoning – need a tour guide.

This area is formed from Basaltic rock and extiends 2 kilometers from the area called Castrejon and ends at the falls called Ines Maria. Take the road from Banos to Ambato- about 1 kilometer to the area called Pititig, take a right turn to the Zoo headed to the township of Lligua . Cross the bridge called San Martin ( impressive view) Signs mark the way. You can also take a bus in Banos to this area. Here you can rock climb. Contact tour guide. Also, there is food and beverages and a tarabita ( primitive cable car) across the river.
